Lesson 5
Coping Skills
Today’s lesson focused on how to deal with disappointments, upsets, and frustrating feelings that we have little or no control over (for example: not getting invited to a party or a parent forgetting a promise). We learned the difference between coping and moping. If you are coping with something it means you are working it out and dealing with it. If you are moping about something it means you are whining and complaining about it. Which one is better for you to do? How does coping make you feel as compared to moping?
Some examples of healthy coping skills that you learned are taking deep breaths, sharing your feelings using “I” messages, coloring and drawing, sports, writing a letter about what happened, keeping a journal, playing with a pet, reading a book, and using your imagination while playing alone or with your friends.
